Panel discussion: The Decarbonization of Finance at a Tipping Point

Panel description:

With scientific consensus pointing to a critical tipping point, where climate change may become irreversible, annual global investments in energy transition technologies must reach over $5 trillion to be on track for 1.5°C. How are financial policies, regulations, and market incentives accelerating the pace of decarbonization to avert irreversible environmental damage? What innovative financial instruments and strategies can be employed to incentivize businesses across industries, including agriculture, energy production, and manufacturing, to transition towards more sustainable and low-carbon practices? What opportunities for growth are enabled by the decarbonization of finance?

Background on IEFA

The International Economic Forum of the Americas (IEFA) was created in 1994 to encourage connection, collaboration and innovation in order to address the world’s major challenges. The organization leverages its extensive network to convene a series of annual events across the globe where heads of state and government, members of the business community and civil society, trade union leaders and academics – all of them experts in their respective fields – can meet and discuss their common objectives and ways to achieve them.

Background on the Conference of Montreal

Launched in 1994 by the International Economic Forum of the Americas (IEFA), the Conference of Montreal (CDM) brings together decision makers from all spheres of society to address the most pressing issues of our time.

30th edition – Leading in an Accelerating World

The Age of Acceleration refers to the exponential progress of computer processing, communication technologies, globalised markets and energetic generation that characterises our time. These changes have profoundly transformed the way we govern, work, spend and interact with each other. In addition to the disruptions caused by these transformations to the conduct of global affairs, the vertiginous advance of climate change and the imperatives established in the Paris Agreement have led to a drastic shift in industrial operations and global investments. However, the rate of adoption and implementation of sustainable practices must now significantly increase if we are to meet the imperatives of our time.

The 30th edition of the Conference of Montreal will seek to tackle key strategic and existential questions concerning: The Energy Transition, The Future of Work, Innovation & Economic Disruption, Supply Chain Security, Geopolitics and Global Health, to provide agency to individuals and organisations in the advent of the two greatest catalysts of our time: Artificial Intelligence and Climate Change.
