Session description
The global biodiversity challenges call for innovative finance mechanisms that can bridge the funding gap required to protect and restore biodiversity. Lessons learned from climate finance offer evidence that instruments such as biodiversity bonds and other sustainability-linked financial products can help mobilize private capital at scale. However, a key challenge in developing these products lies in the ability to design Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that accurately capture biodiversity impacts. To become more attractive for potential issuers and investors, biodiversity-related financial products need robust, transparent, and measurable KPIs that are aligned with capital markets’ standards for impact measurement and reporting.
This panel aims to explore the innovative financial mechanisms that are being developed to support biodiversity conservation and restoration. It also seeks to discuss the critical challenges and opportunities associated with designing KPIs that provide clear metrics to facilitate tracking impact, assessing and managing risks, and ensuring transparency, all of which increase the likelihood of success and make these instruments more attractive to both issuers and investors.
